Set within the rural landscape of Hinton, High Poplars is a property with a long architectural history. Its traditional proportions, rendered elevations and distinctive brickwork are characteristic of the older farmhouses found throughout this part of Suffolk.

In 2024, Suffolk Lime undertook the complete removal and replacement of the property’s existing external render, bringing traditional lime-rendering craftsmanship to a building where the choice of materials and quality of finish were particularly important.

01 / The building

A Farmhouse Rooted in Suffolk’s History

High Poplars forms part of a historic farmstead whose origins can be traced to the late 16th century.

The farmhouse is recorded as having a timber-framed structure, with later additions from the 17th century. Historic mapping also documents the surrounding farmstead, offering a glimpse into the property’s long association with Suffolk’s agricultural landscape.

Buildings of this age have a character that comes from generations of adaptation. Their materials, proportions and subtle irregularities are part of what makes them special — and deserve to be considered carefully when carrying out repairs or restoration.

02 / The work

Renewing the External Render

The project involved completely removing the existing external render before applying a new lime-based finish.

For traditional buildings, external rendering is about more than appearance. The materials used must be appropriate to the underlying construction, allowing the building to manage moisture while accommodating the natural movement associated with older structures.

Lime render has long been valued for these qualities, making it particularly suited to many historic cottages, farmhouses and timber-framed properties.

At High Poplars, the work called for a carefully considered approach, respecting the relationship between the rendered elevations, exposed brickwork and traditional architectural details.

03 / The finish

Traditional Materials, Lasting Character

A well-executed lime finish should sit comfortably within the character of the building.

Rather than seeking the uniform perfection of modern construction, traditional lime rendering allows for the softer textures and natural variations that complement older architecture.

The renewal of High Poplars’ external render reflects an approach central to Suffolk Lime’s work: combining established materials with skilled workmanship and respect for the buildings entrusted to us.

The intention is always to achieve a finish that feels appropriate to its setting — quietly enhancing the property without losing what makes it distinctive.

Suffolk Lime

Lime Rendering for Historic and Traditional Properties

Across Suffolk, many period homes, timber-framed buildings and traditional cottages benefit from the considered use of lime-based materials.

Whether a property requires localised render repairs or complete external re-rendering, understanding its construction is essential to achieving a suitable, sympathetic result.
